Newly Designed Count-A-Dose to Be Released in April

By Freeman, Michael; Braille Monitor, Vol. 53, No. 4
Publication Date: April 2010

Article features a newly designed version of the Count-A-Dose system for filling insulin syringes. The original Count-A-Dose, a simple instrument manufactured by MediCool that allowed blind diabetics to measure and draw up insulin, was discontinued, reportedly following the introduction of more stringent FDA testing standards for the device. The new FDA approved product, marketed as the Prodigy Count-A-Dose, is designed to fill insulin syringes safely and accurately with one or two bottles of insulin. The bottle holder is marked to identify bottles for mixing, with one raised dot for the first, and two raised dots for the second bottle. A click dial is used to measure the insulin, drawing one unit of insulin into the syringe with each click of the dial. At the time the article was published, the Prodigy Count-A-Dose was scheduled to be available in late April 2010.
