Children’s Book is More Than Meets the Eye

By Walker, Theresa; Orange County Register,
Publication Date: April 19, 2010

Article features a children’s story book with customizable insert slots to improve reading and communication skills in children with autism. Developed by parents of a child with autism, the picture book, “Look Who Is Coming,” allows personalizing the story of a car, bus, and truck traveling along a country road towards a house by inserting photos of family members, pets, and significant others into sleeves cut into the edge of each page. The child lifts a flap hiding the picture to reveal “who is coming” along the road to the house. Other surprises include a bowl of goldfish in a window of the house and butterflies on a bush that are discovered by lifting a flap with text written on the underside. Illustrations for the book were made by one of the child’s therapists. “Look Who Is Coming” is available on the parents’ website, http://vazukids.com/.
