By Myers, Katie; Amacher, Anne Marie; Cantrell, Meredith; Bohs, Larry; NSF 2007 Engineering Senior Design Projects to Aid Persons With Disabilities, pp. 52-53Publication Date: 2010
Description of an automatic rocking chair developed for children with disabilities living in a group home setting. Designed at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, the Automatic Rocking Chair incorporates a glider style rocking chair powered by a 90 volt DC gear motor. A speed control, which is mounted on the side of the chair and plugs into a wall outlet, allows users to adjust rocking speed. A switch mounted on an adjustable-height tray attached to the chair allows children to initiate the rocking motion, a feature which can be turned off for those who do not have the physical or cognitive ability to use it. The design also incorporates a timer and a TumbleForms child seat with an adjustable incline. Wheels attached to the back legs and a lifting strap fastened to the front legs of the chair make the Automatic Rocking chair transportable.
