iPhone 4 Video Relay Service Assists Deaf, Hearing Impaired

By Hearing Review - The Insider,
Publication Date: August 12, 2010

Article describes software that enables video relay service on the Apple iPhone 4. The software, iZ, allows deaf, hard of hearing, and speech impaired people to communicate with hearing people in real-time via a sign language interpreter. Using an iPhone 4 with a real-time video connection, an interpreter relays the conversation between the two parties: voicing what the deaf person is signing to the hearing caller and translating the spoken words into American Sign Language for the deaf or hard of hearing caller to see. The new technology is marketed through a partnership between Apple, AT&T, and The Z, maker of the software.
