iBGStar Plug-in Glucose Meter for the iPhone and iPod touch

By Quick, Darren; Gizmag,
Publication Date: September 22, 2010

Article features a plug-in attachment for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch that includes a blood glucose meter enabling readings in real time. The compact device, called the iBGStar, attaches to the iPhone or iPod touch’s dock connector and uses the mobile device to perform computational functions and display results. The meter automatically synchronizes data with the iBGStar Diabetes Manager App to keep track of blood glucose, carbohydrate intake, and insulin dose. In addition, the app allows users to input specific personalized information to help analyze patterns and variations. The iBGStar also functions as a standalone blood glucose meter and includes a backlit display to provide a blood glucose level readout without being connected to an iPhone or iPod touch. The iBGStar must first receive an FDA 510(k) clearance in order to be classified as a medical device. At the time the article was written, the maker Sanofi-aventis was planning to release both the iBGStar device and the iBGStar App in early 2011, with the device itself expected to cost around 80 dollars and the app being available as a free download from the App Store.
