Portable Mini-Golf With Putting Assist

By Bestvina, Christine; Bokhari, Danial; Caves, Kevin; Goldberg, Richard; NSF 2008 Engineering Senior Design Projects to Aid Persons With Disabilities, pp. 60-61
Publication Date: 2011

Description of a portable and accessible mini golf course designed for individuals at a facility that provides job and social opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. The Portable Mini-Golf includes 4 holes: straight, L-shaped, hourglass, and tunneled, made from a layer of indoor/outdoor carpet on top of layers of carpet padding. The edges of the course are reinforced with PVC pipe to prevent the ball from leaving the playing surface. In addition, a putting assist device was designed for an individual with cerebral palsy who uses a power wheelchair. The device, which is mounted with clamps to the wheelchair lap tray, allows the client to pull back and release a custom putter via a lifting handle attached to a ratchet. To swing the putter, the client pushes on a release bar. The course is easily stored using a grommet and metal rod storage system. Cost of parts for the golf course and putting assist device was approximately 540 dollars.
