By Shadow, Simon; HowStuffWorks,Publication Date: downloaded July 14, 2011
Article provides do-it-yourself instructions for building a wheelchair ramp for a private home. Wheelchair ramp specifications stipulated in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are outlined, including width, slope, landings, handrails and guardrails, edge protection, and slip resistant surfacing. Advantages and disadvantages of various ramp building materials including wood, concrete, steel and wood are discussed from the point of view of cost, durability, maintenance, and weight bearing. Treatments of the surface of the ramp are described, including the incorporation of anti-slip properties in concrete, the use of sealer or varnish to prevent wood rotting and warping, and steel galvanization to prevent rust and corrosion. Finally, the steps of the wheelchair ramp building process are outlined, including the selection of building materials, determination of the slope ratio, and fabrication and assembly of the ramp sections. A calculation per ADA guidelines of slope ratio and a list of website links providing further information about wheelchair ramps are included.
