The IntelliWheels Automatic Gear-Shifting System for Wheelchairs

By Quick, Darren; Gizmag,
Publication Date: July 21, 2011

Article features an innovative automatic gear system for manual wheelchairs. The invention of a graduate student in engineering at the University of Illinois, the IntelliWheels AGS (Automatic Gear-Shift) system is a set of two wheelchair wheels that are compatible with any manual wheelchair. Sensors placed on the underside of the wheelchair analyze torque, speed, and tilt to detect the force with which the wheelchair user is pushing, traveling speed, and surface slope to select the proper gear. The wheels are designed to make climbing hills less of a strain. Each wheel weighs about 5 pounds and can be quickly released from the wheelchair for transport. According to the article, the IntelliWheels AGS will be commercially available following usability testing, which is estimated to be after September 2012.
