Medication Reminder Tool: A System to Remind Medical Staff of Medication Administration Time
By Frantz, Caroline; Kerch, Krista; Mehno, Kelly; Smith, Sean; Smith, Nadine; NSF 2009 Engineering Senior Design Projects to Aid Persons With Disabilities, pages 148-149Publication Date: 2011
Paper describes the development of a system that prompts medical staff to administer their clients’ medication. The reminder system was designed by engineering students at Pennsylvania State University for a human services provider that supports patients with physical, developmental, and emotional disabilities. The system consists of a laptop computer interfaced with a TracFone cell phone. A computer program written in MATLAB serves as the alarm system. At the time of medication administration, the computer screen displays a dialog box with the time and patient name. This dialog box can be “snoozed” for ten minute intervals up to an hour and a half to accommodate the busy schedule of the staff members. The program also sends a reminder text message to the cell phone carried by the staff at the same time that the dialog appears on the laptop screen. The design criteria for the system were compiled from several employees at the service provider and complemented by an on-site visit at a group home receiving the services of the provider. To keep the design simple, dependable, and low cost, pre-manufactured products were used in the final product, including an ACER laptop computer, MATLAB programming CD, and the TracFone.
