(Verified 2/2005) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- The Axs 1600 is a portable computer direct selection communicator designed for use by individuals with communication disabilities. This device is a fully functional Windows 98 pen-based portable computer pre-loaded with Windows 98 and Microsoft Internet Explorer and a choice of communications packages. This system is available with WiVik 2 and WiVox (see entries) and/or with Vanguard for Windows, a highly customizable symbol-based communication program containing hundreds of pre-stored words and phrases. Vanguard includes a Language Activity Monitor that records the use of one or more letters, words, phrases, sentences, etc. and attaches a time stamp, enabling the tracking of an individual's progress. Selections can be made using the built-in touch screen and pen, a mouse or track ball, HeadMaster 2000 or HeadMaster Plus (not included; see entries), or by one to four switches. The unit features a built-in, lightweight stand and it can be mounted on a wheelchair. Other standard features include 52 megabytes of RAM, 4.1 gigabytes of hard drive space, a built-in 56 K modem, and a SVGA color touch screen. POWER: Uses a rechargeable battery for 5.5 hours of use between charges. Extra battery packs are available. OPTIONS: Floppy disk drive, port expander, keyboard, stand, and a shoulder strap.
