-------- CUSTOMIZED ADAPTATION --------- PURPOSE: To create a custom adapted tandem, recumbent and upright tricycle for a young adult with traumatic brain injury and limited mobility to aid in his recovery. Unable to local any adaptive tandem bikes that would meet his son's needs, the father who has a background in mechanical engineering spent six months designing and building a custom adapted trike. Like many commercially-available tandem cycles, the design puts the front passenger (the son) in the recumbent position, while the rear passenger (the father) sits upright, looking forward. Both users can provide pedaling power with their legs, but unlike conventional tandem cycles, both individuals can also steer. The adaptation took the son's changing level of abilities into account. Originally, the headrest was important until neck strength had improved, and as strength was regained in the arms and legs, the ability to steer came into play. The trike provides therapeutic benefits (physically and cognitively) as well as providing a way for father and son to connect and be social together. AUTHOR: Ben Coxworth.
