--- DISCONTINUED. (Verified 2/2005) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- The AlphaTalker is a direct selection or scanning communicator designed to assist nonverbal individuals and those with speech disabilities to converse. This communication board is designed for those with limited communication needs and may be used as an introductory communication tool, as an evaluation tool, or for persons with short term speech loss. The unit comes standard with 3 minutes of standard or 5.25 minutes of extended digitized speech. Standard features of the board include a 32-location keyguard, but can be configured with 4 or 8 locations to provide larger touch areas. The board may be accessed by the keyboard, a headpointer, or by scanning when connected to these optional accessories (see separate entries). The AlphaTalker offers icon prediction. When an icon is selected, those icons that are sequenced with it light up to remind the user where vocabulary is stored. This feature provides a learning tool and memory aid. A similar feature permits only those keys which are lit to be selected, reducing unwanted activations when using direct selection and increasing scanning speed when using an optional scanning device. The communicator comes with a video tape, an operator's manual, and a First Steps tutorial which addresses the practical aspects of implementing a communication device. OPTIONS: A module providing an additional 14.5 minutes of standard or 25 minutes of extended speech, the Optical Headpointer (see separate entry), a carrying case (model ATCC- 1) and carrying straps (models ATCS-1 and ATSS-1), Remote Switch Adapter (model RSB-1), 4- and 8-position Operating Kits (models ATOK-4 and ATOK-8), a Memory Module (model ATMM-4), and a Memory Transfer Interface or MTI (see separate entry), and others. COMPATIBILITY: Vocabulary may be saved to a computer disk, and the unit may be used to perform limited computer emulation. Up to 32 commands can be sent to Apple, Macintosh, or IBM compatible computers (with an emulating interface and MTI version 3.1). An MTI can also be used to load commands to operate environmental controls. COLOR: Available in Blue (AT-1B) or Yellow (AT-1Y).
