(Verified 7/2000) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- BookWise is an optical character recognition program designed to be used as a teaching tool for reading, language, spelling and other academic instruction. The program may be especially suitable for use in educational programs for people with dyslexia and other learning disabilities and for people who are recovering from stroke or head injury. It can also be used in adult literacy and remedial reading programs and in educational programs to teach English to speakers of other languages. BookWise allows teachers to incorporate virtually any desired reading materials into their programs, allowing them to select those that best match the curriculum and student interests. GENERAL FEATURES: This PC-based system integrates a scanner, Xerox Imaging Systems (XIS) proprietary Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) software and a DECtalk speech board. It can read virtually any typeface or size, documents with multiple columns, and even documents with lower print quality such that produced by dot matrix printers. BookWise is designed to allow people with learning disabilities to read independently. In addition, as material is read aloud, it is highlighted on the student's computer screen by word, phrase or sentence, thus providing visual tracking assistance. Students can adjust the rate at which material is read. The DECtalk board allows students to choose from among nine voices to find the one with which they are most comfortable. A syllabification option displays a highlighted word in a dialog box and pronounces it first syllable by syllable and then as a whole, reinforcing decoding skills. A spelling option displays a highlighted word in a dialog box and spells it out by highlighting each letter, thus reinforcing word retention, spelling, and pronunciation. The dictionary option allows the student to access on- line the 30,000 word American Heritage Electronic Dictionary and provides information on part of speech, definition, and pronunciation. COMPATIBILITY: BookWise can be used with most IBM PC computers and 100 percent compatibles, and with the PC/KPR reading system from Xerox Imaging Systems (XIS). It can be used with either economical flatbed scanners or bookedge scanners that allow distortion-free scanning of bound materials.
