--- DISCONTINUED. (Verified 03/2009) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- Nomad Mentor is a voice output program system that provides voice output from tactile pictures, diagrams, and maps for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. The system consists of a touch-sensitive pad with a built-in speech synthesizer that can be programmed using any IBM-compatible computer. With this system, any amount of information can be associated with a tactile diagram (for example, a map or floor plan) and spoken aloud when the diagram is placed on the pad and pressed at the appropriate points. The system includes software that allows annotations for tactile graphics to be entered, stored, and edited in named files. Using this system, a blind person can explore a floor plan with his or her fingers, pressing down on the diagram to obtain more information about a point of interest. This information is then spoken by the speech synthesizer.
