Braillino is a braille notetaker designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This notetaker has a 20-character braille display with two Triple Action keys and an eight-key braille keyboard. It can be used independently or connected by a docking station to the Nokia Communicator, models 9210i or 9290 (see separate entry), a cell phone / personal data assistant (PDA). When the notetaker is connected to the Communicator, the latter can be controlled using the notetaker's braille keyboard, while text displayed on the Communicator is transferred into speech and braille by the Talks&Braille software that comes with the docking station. This provides speech and braille access for all the Communicator's functions, including a telephone and address book, a calendar with schedule and alarm functions, office functions with word processing, a voice recorder, and e-mail, Internet and text messaging. Functions that can be activated by either the braille keyboard or the Talks&Braille menu include cursor tracking, switching between braille input and Talks&Braille commands, hotkey functions, and changing of the cursor shape. Speech output is in Eloquence. Speed, pitch, and loudness can be adjusted, and speech output can be heard using the built-in speaker of the Communicator or a headset. The notetaker is ergonomically designed so that the position of the concave braille keys allows a relaxed position for the user's hands. Hands can be rested on the rounded surface of the notetaker without pressing keys by mistake. The two Triple Action keys each control three functions by pressing the upper, lower, or center part of the key. These concave keys are located to the left and to the right of the braille reading area. In order to place the cursor in a specific location, each of the 20 braille elements has an integrated cursor routing key. The notetaker has 4 megabytes (MB) of flash memory that can store up to 512 files. Files can be transferred to and from a personal computer (PC), but when files in Windows Explorer or Word format are downloaded to the notetaker, its transfer software maximizes memory usage by extracting only text information. A single file can be as large as 3 MB, and up to five files can be open at the same time. Users can switch between open files with Alt+Tab. Editing functions include the block functions, copy (Ctrl+c), cut (Ctrl+x), and paste (Ctrl+v). The notetaker also has a clipboard and a search and replace function. OPTIONS: Docking stations for the Nokia Communicator, for Qwerty (alphabetic keyboard) input, and for wireless control of a computer. POWER: Uses four double-A rechargeable batteries.
