---- PROTOTYPE ---- PURPOSE: To develop a hands-free wheelchair steering system through brain wave activity for persons with limited mobility. Toyota, in collaboration with other researchers in Japan, has developed one of the fastest systems for analyzing brain waves. This new technology requires only 125 milliseconds (125 thousandths of a second) to read brain waves. An individual uses the prototype system by placing a cap on his or her head that reads brain signals through an electroencephalograph (EEG) on the electronically-powered wheelchair. The brain signals are then analyzed through a computer program. The individual is then able to direct the wheelchair to go left or right or forward almost instantly.
