-------- “DO IT YOURSELF” ENTRY ------- PURPOSE: To create a garden area with raised garden beds to be easily used by persons with mobility issues. The garden area was designed for a 15 by 13 foot space that composed of four-quadrant raised planting beds surrounded by 4 foot walkways with a 5 foot turnaround area in the center. The planter boxes are each 4 ½ by 3 ½ feet and are topped with an 8 inch wide boards for seating while working. INSTRUCTIONS: First, starting in the back corner, measure in 4 ½ feet, the length of the one planter box, and mark the spot with paint. Second, measure in another 4 feet for the width of the back walkway, and mark this spot. Third, measure 3 ½ feet in for the width of the one planter box, Mark spot. Fourth, measure in 4 feet for another walkway, leaving 3 ½ feet for the front planter, which will sit flush in the front corner of the garden area. Fifth, use a chalk string line to connect the lines, showing exactly where everything will be placed. This design allows all planters to be accessible from at least three sides. MATERIALS: A wood/polymer lumber is used for constructing the beds. The lumber is 50 percent wood and 50 percent plastic. This combination is water resistant and will not be affected by termites or wood rot. Additionally, this combination does not require painting, sealing, or staining to protect it from UV rays or moisture, has no toxic preservatives, and can be disposed of with any other construction type waste.
