--- DISCONTINUED. (Verified 7/2000) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- The Reading AdvantEdge is an optical character recognition program for use with personal computers for blind and low vision users. Using artificial intelligence, the proprietary Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software with its 50,000 word vocabulary, recognizes text in virtually any typeface or size, including italicized, boldface, and underscored text. It reads both single and multiple column formats in portrait and landscape orientations. Automatic page orientation allows the software to continue to recognize materials that are placed on the scanner upside down. The software can recognize five languages in addition to English. It can also recognize many low quality documents such as draft dot matrix, as well as electronic faxes. A variety of options are available to the user. For example, using screen reading software and a synthesized speech card, the text can be read aloud. The text can also be imported into numerous word processing and spreadsheet applications, including Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, and Lotus. Or, using other software packages, the text can be enlarged or converted to Braille. In addition, the user can access other applications without leaving the Reading AdvantEdge program. Other features include scanning in TIFF format for later recognition, a customizable user lexicon, and customizable user settings. The program operates through both menus and command line interface, allowing for use by both novice and advanced users. On-line help is available at all times and user documentation is available in print, Braille, audiocassette, and diskette formats. The Reading AdvantEdge can be purchased alone, or bundled with an Xerox Imaging Systems (XIS) scanner and DECtalk synthesized speech card. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: IBM PC 386 or greater or 100% compatible, minimum 16 Mhz. DOS 3.1 or higher. Hard disk with minimum of 14 MB. 8 MB RAM recommended. Scanners supported include: XIS GS plus and SA4-3; Hewlett-Packard IIc, IIp, ScanJet, and ScanJet Plus. The program is compatible with most popular screen reading packages.
