Use of a Modified Tilt Table for Preambulation Strength Training as an Adjunct to Burn Rehabilitation: A Case Series
By Trees, Darin W.; Ketelsen, Christi A.; Hobbs, Julie A., PhD; Journal of Burn Care & Rehabilitation, Vol. 24, No. 2, pp. 97-103Publication Date: March/April 2003
Article describing the use of a Modified Tilt Table (MTT) that allows users to perform a weight-bearing exercise in a gravity-reduced environment. Use of the MTT can offer a more effective therapeutic option when treating critically ill patients by providing a safe and controlled transition from bed rest to ambulation. The table was used to perform an inclined squat exercise. The amount of force the patient exerted to fully extend his or her knees from the squat position was dependent on the incline of the table. Users typically lifted about 20 percent of their body weight at 10 degrees, and about 65 percent at 30 degrees. Four case studies are presented to illustrate the use of the MTT. The authors conclude that while the MTT helped to provide a safe transition from traction to standing, further research is necessary.
