Ralph: The Home Assistant
By Hardy, Debbie; Post-Polio Health, Vol. 20, No. 4, pp. 1-2Publication Date: Fall 2004
Article discusses Ralph, which is an automated home technology system that utilizes voice recognition technology to monitor, supervise, and communicate with residents via voice output. The system consists of a keyboard, monitor, tiny speakers, and motion detectors, and was designed to assist a man with paralysis who was unable to adjust his thermostat or open his drapes. Not only can Ralph perform these functions, but it can also control lights, ceiling fans, and television, DVD, VCR, and stereo systems. The system can also serve as an alarm clock for wake-up times, medications, and meals, and can control small appliances. Another useful function is its ability control water temperature in the shower, and Ralph can also read the newspaper aloud, type and read e-mail, and acts as a home security system. People who prefer to not use the voice command system can operate Ralph via pushbutton control. The author contends that the system allows people to live independently in their own homes by performing functions that cannot be performed independently.
