Wheelchair Foundation and LDS Church Distribute Free Wheelchairs to Disabled in Bosnia and Herzegovina

By AT Journal, Vol. 95, No. 1
Publication Date: April 2004

Article discusses efforts made by the Wheelchair Foundation to deliver over 10 thousand new wheelchairs per month to people with physical disabilities around the world. In April 2004, in conjunction with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the organization delivered 250 wheelchairs to Bosnians with physical disabilities who could not afford to purchase one on their own. The Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina identified recipients for the distribution. The Wheelchair Foundation matched funds donated by the church to purchase the wheelchairs. The Wheelchair Foundation, founded in 2000 by philanthropist Kenneth E. Behring, has delivered more than 225 thousand wheelchairs in over 120 countries, and has an initial goal of delivering 1 million wheelchairs by 2009.
