Summer of Sights: Summer Enrichment Program for Students With Visual Impairments

By Harvey, Keri, MEd, COMS; Tomlin, Kathy, MEd, CTVI; Foster, Mary Ann, CTVI; See/Hear, Vol. 9, No. 3
Publication Date: Summer 2004

Paper discusses the Summer of Sights project, which is a two-week summer enrichment program for students in grades one through eleven with visual disabilities. The project was especially designed for students who are served by the Grayson County Special Education Co-Op in Texas, which serves 11 small school districts in the county. The students are most often the only ones with visually disabilities in their schools, which provides them with few opportunities to meet and socialize with peers who are blind or have low vision. In 2003, the focus of the program was to enhance the students’ daily living and social skills, while 2004 saw the program focus on recreational and leisure activities. A day-to-day schedule of program activities is presented, while funding, personnel, transportation, and budget requirements for the program are discussed.
