Connecting AAC Devices to the World of Information Technology

Article discusses the fields of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) in a historical context, and provides a review of the current state of the technology. Current trends focus on wireless technology, as e-mail and mobile phone technologies are the norm in mass communication. Such wireless technologies hold promise for people with disabilities, as they promote independence and convenience, and facilitate access to private and public access systems. Barriers to modern technologies do exist among people with disabilities, but legislation, advocacy, standards, and research aim to ensure that everyone has access to modern AAC technology.
