This article describes the development and operation of the University of Virginia's Rehabilitation Engineering Service's (UVA-RES) quality assessment and improvement program. This program is a formal implementation of quality assurance (QA) and continuous quality improvement (CQI) in a rehabilitation technology and assistive technology setting. Since 1989 the program's staff have worked with specialists to develop, implement, and update quality assessment and improvement (QA&I) plans and practices which comply with accreditation standards and improve the quality of services and products provided. The author believes the university's plan can be used as a model for other programs.
