Developments in Technology to Increase Access to Education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

This paper briefly reviews issues involved in the use of the various technologies to aid deaf and hard of hearing individuals to receive and understand the information that is transmitted by speech in lectures, classes and seminars. It also reports on current investigations and trials. Topics include electronic text communication; remote sign language interpretation; computer generated signs; automatic and computer aided speech recognition text transcription; and real time verbatim transcription.
