Three-Dimensional Virtual Environments for Blind Children

Paper focuses on AudioChile and AudioVida, which are interactive virtual environments that incorporate three-dimensional sound so that children who are blind can orientate, avoid obstacles, and identify objecting within the environments. AudioChile allows the user to be immersed in a three-dimensional world in which he or she can explore one of three geographical regions of Chile by navigating, interacting, and solving tasks and problems. AudioVida offers a virtual environment that simulates orientation and mobility within a maze-like environment. The user navigates through the geographical maze in AudioChile and the maze in AudioVida via audio cues and interaction. This paper was written by researchers at the Department of Psychology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
