Article focuses on robotics and smart home design, as the authors contend that allowing people with disabilities to remain in the home is preferable to institutional treatment for most rehabilitation clients. A smart home needs to be able to evaluate and decipher events in the home via sensors, which should be linked together and with an emergency alert system. The sensors across each room should be allowed to communicate with one another, while they should also be able to communicate with the resident via a personalized sensor worn by that resident. A successful system will supervise health, prevent problems, accidents, and dangerous situations, inform staff and family member of changes in status, and provide online services to the client.
