Amputee is First Civilian to Get Hi-Tech, $95,000 Military Grade Bionic Leg

Article features the Genium, a battery powered prosthetic leg. The Genium uses a highly sophisticated sensory system to allow its wearer to easily walk backward, climb stairs, and step around obstacles on uneven ground. The waterproof leg is outfitted with microprocessors and a gyroscope which enable it to read and react to the wearer’s surroundings. With the click of a button, it can also be switch into specific modes to enhance the wearer’s ability to perform activities such as holding a golf stance or riding a bicycle. The Genium was built by the German manufacturer Otto Bock in collaboration with the United States military. The article details how the prosthetic has improved the life of a Bronx, New York native who lost a leg in a motorcycle accident.
