Hingenious 2.0

Paper outlines the design and development of an anti-tipping system that can be applied to a variety of wheelchairs. The device is an inexpensive attachment that adds an extra caster wheel to each side to effectively widen the wheelbase of a chair and add lateral stability. The Hingenious 2.0 design incorporates a crossbar that allows it to attach to the longitudinal side span of the wheelchair. This reduces the amount of space taken up by the attachment and increases the structural integrity of the overall design. The design also incorporates a simple locking mechanism for easy user operation. When the attachment is stowed away, it is completely out of the way, taking up only unused space. The design of the outer clamp allows the caster wheel to be lifted half an inch off the ground so that it does not interfere with normal use. When the wheelchair needs to be folded up, the outriggers can be removed and a pin in the middle of the cross bar allows it to fold with the wheelchair. The only noted disadvantage of the design is that it slightly reduces the usable arm space during wheelchair operation. The Hingenious 2.0 anti-tipping system was designed by engineering students at the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
