« Previous Product Next Product »-------- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of robotic legs to assist individuals with mobility disabilities and/or paralysis to walk. Professor Yoshiyuki Sankai of CYBERDYNE Inc. has developed the Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL), an exo-skeletal orthosis for both arms and legs that provides support and initiates limb movement. Professor Sankai was inspired by Noboru Matsumoto suffered severe brain injuries that caused speech and walking disabilities although he retained some movement in his left leg. Sensors are placed the user's skin that picks up the brain signals instructing the body to move. The sensors detect the user’s intentions and the robot moves the user’s arms or legs (including walking). The key to HAL’s success is that the user must have nerve function in the limbs.
